COLORADO — Springs The Pikes Peak Workforce Center has been awarded a $75,000 grant by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment to study the needs of the state’s aerospace community.

Sherman Swafford, the center’s business relations group manager, said the grant would help identify the best ways to train and connect entry-level workers for the industry.

“The main thing we’re trying to determine is, when this industry needs entry level workers, can we identify and can we train those workers so there’s plenty of workers in that pipeline ready to go when that contract happens,” Swafford said. “There are some great-paying jobs in this field.”

One key component, he said, will be figuring out how to connect people leaving the military with aerospace defense contractors.

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center is teaming with the Tri-County Workforce Center in Golden on the study.

Once the study is completed, the workforce centers will pursue other funding and work with local educational providers to design programs to meet the need, Swafford said.
