CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies said rookie right fielder Domonic Brown is expected to have surgery on his broken right hand.

Brown traveled back to Philadelphia on Sunday and will be examined by specialist Dr. Randall Culp. Brown will probably have surgery Tuesday.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Brown would probably need anywhere from three to six weeks to heal from surgery.

Brown hurt himself swinging the bat in a game Saturday.

White Sox give Thornton new deal

GLENDALE, Ariz. — All-star reliever Matt Thornton agreed to a $15 million, three-year contract with the White Sox that adds two years and $12 million to his previous deal.

The 34-year-old Thornton went 5-4 with a 2.67 ERA and a career-high eight saves last season. He fanned 81 in 60 2/3 innings to become the first White Sox reliever to lead the AL in strikeouts since Keith Foulke in 1999.

Meeting of the minds

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The unions for players and umpires held a rare joint meeting.

The 2 1/2-hour session came at the request of the players’ association in early October after a series of missed calls in the playoffs.

“Just a conversation about areas of mutual concern,” MLB executive Rob Manfred said.

Footnotes.

Brewers right fielder Corey Hart said he could be out longer than originally expected after aggravating his strained left oblique muscle. Manager Ron Roenicke said he hopes to have Hart ready by opening day.

• The Padres hope center fielder Cameron Maybin can return to the lineup today after missing five games with concussion-like symptoms.
