Colorado State senior forward Andy Ogide, who fought off a steady diet of inside double-teams to average 17 points and a Mountain West Conference-best 58.8 percent shooting rate, was named Monday to the All-MWC first team.

A second team pick a year ago, the 6-foot-9 Ogide is CSU’s first first-team selection since Jason Smith in 2007.

Sixth-man honors went to CSU sophomore Pierce Hornung, a Ralston Valley High product from Arvada. He took charges, fought for lose balls and general gave the Rams a lift. He averaged 4.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 20.3 minutes a game.

“He’s deserving and worthy,” CSU coach Tim Miles said of Hornung on The Mtn. selection show. “He changes the complexion of a game with his hard work.”

Ogide was also fourth in MWC rebounding at 7.6 a game.

While the Rams, 19-11, 9-7, hit a speed bump down the stretch, Ogide led the team consistently.

The Mississippi transfer, who is taking graduate classes, helped the Rams to their first upper division MWC seed (No. 4), since the league’s inaugural season in 2000.

“I’m very proud of Andy. He’s been a real force for us,” Miles said. “He’s continued to just get better and better in all facets of his game.”

Ogide was joined on the first team by MWC player of the year Jimmer Fredette of BYU, San Diego State’s Kawhi Leonard and D.J. Gay and New Mexico’s Dairese Gary.

Air Force’s Michael Lyons made the third team, as did BYU’s Brandon Davies, who was suspended last week for an honor code violation.

Women’s team named

On the women’s side, CSU placed senior Kim Mestdagh on the second team and freshman Sam Martin was named to the third team.

Wyoming’s Aubrey Vandiver made the first team and was named MWC women’s player of the year. The 5-11 guard attended Greeley West for a year when her father, Shaun Vandiver, coached at UNC.

The All-MWC was combined votes from coaches and media. Coaches were allowed to vote for their own players. Each ballot ranked the league’s top 15 players.
