Colorado senior Brittany Spears, who ranks second on the Buffaloes’ all-time scoring list, on Monday was named to the All-Big 12 Conference first team after a vote of the league’s coaches.
Spears’ 2,054 career points trails only Lisa Van Goor (2,068 points from 1980-85) on CU’s scoring list.
The 6-foot-1 guard from Pasadena, Calif., ranked fifth in the conference in scoring this season with 18 points per game. She is the active leading scorer in the conference and ninth on the all-time list.
Baylor center Brittney Griner, who scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in an 81-59 victory over CU on Saturday, was named Big 12 player of the year. Bears coach Kim Mulkey was tabbed coach of the year.
Baylor guard Melissa Jones, a 5-foot-10 senior guard orignally from Legacy High in Thornton, was also named to the first team.
The Big 12 team is voted on by the league’s head coaches, who cannot vote for their own players.
