Several Boulder High students weren’t happy with the constraints of writing for the school’s newspaper.

So when “The Owl” went online only, they concocted a plan to publish their own paper. The first issue of “The Fowl” published in January, followed by the February issue. They’re finishing up the March issue now.

“We wanted an independent paper run the way we wanted to, to have control of the whole process,” said Boulder High senior Benn Meyers, who’s one of “The Fowl” editors and an editor for “The Owl.”

“We have a lot more freedom in the topics we cover and in the angle we take. We wanted to see if we could do it ourselves — and it turns out we can.”

The students are paying for the printing with a $2,600 grant from Boulder’s Youth Opportunities Advisory Board. The board, made up of students from Boulder schools, awards grants annually for student projects using a fund created with revenue from a 0.15 percent sales tax passed by Boulder voters in 1992.
