Erie motorcycle racer Ricky Orlando, 54, needed just three laps in the AMA Daytona 200 on Saturday to break the record for most miles around the 3 1/2-mile Daytona International Speedway.
Orlando, riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R, completed 40 laps on the way to a 21st-place finish. He broke the record of 3,728 miles held by Rick Shaw of Florida.
But it was a disappointing finish as the 57-lap race was stopped at 42 laps because of a crash.
“We were ready to draft and make a move when the race was red-flagged,” said Orlando, who started racing in 1975. “We were beaten back, again.”
Orlando said he didn’t know how many miles he had racked up at the famed track because he was awaiting the official results of the race that was plagued by multiple problems, including a mandatory front tire changed called by the tire manufacturer.
It is estimated he had at least 3,860.
