After several days of tense waiting, Roger Faris got the news he was waiting for Monday. His daughter, 29-year-old Amanda Faris, was found safe in Japan following a 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

“We did get a posting (on Facebook) that she was sighted in a shelter, alive and well,” said Faris’ girlfriend Barb Larson. “We have yet to hear from her.”

Amanda, a Strasburg High School Class of 2000 graduate, was teaching English in one of Japan’s hardest-hit areas when the quake and tsunami hit.

Amanda worked at a school in Higashimatsushima, a coastal city in northern Japan about thirty miles from Sendai.

“She was in good spirits,” Faris said, adding he was still anxiously waiting for a phone call from his daughter.
