Xcel Energy customer bills for electricity and natural gas are expected to be higher for the next three months, according to the utility’s latest quarterly filing with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, which must approve the increases before they can go into effect.
The cost of electricity is to increase by about 5.5 percent compared with the first quarter of 2011, and natural gas is to go up by 12 percent for residential customers and 14 percent for small businesses compared with the second quarter of 2010.
Despite the cost increases, natural-gas bills are expected to decrease because of warmer weather, the utility said. If approved, the increases go into effect April 1.
