A 20-year-old University of New Hampshire football player was shot to death on Boulder’s University Hill early this morning in what police are describing as an apparent attempted robbery.

The coroner identified the slain 20-year-old as Todd Walker, of Edwards.

Walker was now attending the University of New Hampshire, where he is listed on the school’s website as a redshirt freshman wide receiver for the UNH Wildcats.

Edwards and a female friend were walking home to her house around 2 a.m. after attending parties on University Hill — including one that sparked a near riot at 1555 Broadway — when they were confronted at 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue by a man wearing a black bandanna over his face, officials said.

Police believe it was initially an attempted robbery, but after a verbal and physical confrontation in which the woman was able to pull the bandanna off the suspect’s face, the male suspect pulled out a gun and fired a shot into the air, according to Boulder police. The suspect then fired a second shot at Walker.
