Denver police last year issued more than 3,000 dog-off-leash citations, but the city’s animal control officers are hoping to cut that number.
The police held a press conference this morning in Cheesman Park, reminding dog walkers that pets need to be leashed when they’re out stretching their legs so “everyone can enjoy the park, without injury and property damage,” District 6 police Commander Tony Lopez said.
Animal control Sgt. Aaron McSpadden said you might have a good dog, but your pooch might be approached by another dog and “before you know it, those dogs are in a scuffle. Someone could be bitten.”
Get caught with Fifi off leash and a first-time offender can be fined $80 for first offense off leash. The fines can reach $300 as the priors pile up.
In 2009, the city logged more than 4,000 off-leash tickets.
And while you’re at it, pick up the poop. Leave a pile of animal excrement behind and you can face a fine of $150 if it’s your first offense. The fine can climb to $500.
