Thieves stealing items from parked cars have fired shots near vehicle owners who confronted them and police are warning residents to call for help rather than trying to stop a theft alone.
Those who fear that someone is breaking into their car should call police rather than trying to stop the thief, said Sonny Jackson, Police Department spokesman.
“Don’t go out there and put yourself in harms way. All it takes is one errant bullet to hurt somebody.”
Six times between March 22 and March 29 people who found a thief stealing from their car were chased off by the thieves who fired weapons at the people or the cars, Jackson said.
In some of the incidents, the victim went to the vehicle after hearing a car alarm.
“We don’t believe it is one individual or one group of individuals,” Jackson said.
The crimes have occurred in the 900 block of North Julien Street, at 1942 S. Lafayette St., 845 S. Pennsylvania St., 1330 W. Custer Place, 1401 S. Lafayette St., and in the 2300 block of South Josephine Street. No arrests have been made and police offered no descriptions of any of the thieves. They ask those who have information about any of them to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP, or call the police dispatch center at (720)913-2000.
