Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 16-year-old Hugo boy for investigation of two counts of first-degree murder related to the deaths of his great-grandparents.

An arrest warrant was issued late Thursday for the suspect, whose name has not been released.

This morning Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies arrested him after his release from a Denver hospital. He is set to be arraigned later this afternoon in Lincoln County.

The arrest warrant affidavit has been sealed, according to a Lincoln County court clerk.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesman Lance Clem said CBI investigators interviewed the boy in his hospital room Thursday. He said he does not know what the boy said about the shootings.

He is accused of killing his great-grandmother Laura Clagett, 82, and his step-great-grandfather Chuck Clagett, 80. Both were shot to death in a farmhouse northwest of Hugo.

Lincoln County Coroner Jennifer Nestor said the Clagetts had been dead about two days when their bodies were found Wednesday after the boy crashed their truck outside of Hugo.

She said Laura Clagett was shot “at near contact” with the muzzle of a shotgun, while her husband was also shot with a shotgun “at very close range.” Both were in bed.

The Clagett’s bodies were found in a downstairs bedroom at 42867 Lincoln County Road 29 at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday after Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies went there to tell them their great-grandson had been injured in the crash.
