A pair of boys looking for metal to recycle discovered a body in a suitcase near a popular Denver park this afternoon.
A 13-year-old boy said he and his friend first saw a leg sticking from the suitcase in a field across the street from Ruby Hill park at about 1:15 p.m. When they opened the case, they saw the body of a male inside.
The boys ran to a nearby apartment complex where they told several friends who raced over to see the body for themselves before alerting a nearby public works crew who called police.
Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson confirmed that a partially buried body was located in the field, but said police would need to do some excavation before they can determine anything about the body or how it got to the field.
Rebecca Aweit said she was called by her 11-year-old son, who said he saw the body, and at first believed it was an April Fool’s prank. When her son began to cry on the phone, she knew it was real and raced to her neighborhood.
“Mom, I can’t go to sleep tonight,” her son told her.
