Colorado tight end DaVaughn Thornton, a third-year sophomore out of Denver East, was taken by ambulance off CU’s practice field Monday as a precautionary measure.
He was able to jog off the field after he fell awkwardly on his upper back. “He shook it off,” said Buffs coach Jon Embree. “He landed, he got up.”
Thornton was taken to Boulder Community Hospital for further examination. As part of standard procedure, a fire truck, ambulance and campus police car arrived outside the practice field.
There was no update early Monday evening on his status.
Overall, Embree was encouraged by the defensive effort going into the final week of spring ball. The offense had dominated Saturday’s scrimmage but the defense forced some turnovers and dominated red zone work when the team returned to practice.
CU also announced that first-round draft prospect and All-America offensive tackle Nate Solder will be honored at halftime of the spring game Saturday night. His name and No. 78 jersey number will be displayed on the west side of the stadium outside the press box. Mason Crosby, who kicked for the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, was the last CU football player to have his jersey honored in 2007.
