BALTIMORE — Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was hospitalized Monday with a high fever that will force him to miss his scheduled start Wednesday against the Tigers.
Guthrie began running a fever Sunday and entered a hospital after his temperature started to rise.
“Our doctor felt like it was a form of pneumonia,” manager Buck Sho- walter said after Baltimore beat the Tigers 5-1 on Monday.
Guthrie was absent at Baltimore’s home opener, an indication of just how bad he felt.
Brad Bergesen will start Wednesday in place of Guthrie, whom the Orioles hope to have back Sunday.
• Left-hander Brian Matusz, the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a rib injury.
Holliday could be back this week.
ST. LOUIS — Matt Holliday said he had stomach pains for several days before an appendectomy last week. He also told the Cardinals he didn’t need to go on the 15-day DL.
“I think I can play,” he said.
The Cardinals could have their cleanup hitter back by the weekend. Three days after the surgery, Holliday said he was feeling better each day. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said he had no new timetable on Holliday.
