A Lakewood second-grader got more than a time out for his tantrum. The 8-year-old was pepper-sprayed by police at Glennon Heights Elementary on Feb. 22.

The boy, identified on 9News by only his first name, Aiden, spit at teachers, called them an expletive and stabbed at them with a 1-foot strip of trim he tore from the wall, according to police.

Police used pepper spray to subdue him and place him in handcuffs, according to the report. He wasn’t seriously hurt and was transferred to a school for children with behavioral issues.

“I’m sure what he was doing wasn’t right, but he’s 8 years old,” said his mother, Mandy, who gave the police report to 9News.

Police spokesman Steve Davis said officers acted with everyone’s safety in mind. “You’ve got teachers barricading themselves in a room. They are obviously frightened,” he said. “I think they not only made the right choice, they made a great choice that day to use the pepper spray.” Will Ripley, 9News
