Colorado tight end DaVaughn Thornton, a third-year sophomore from Denver East, was taken by ambulance from the practice field to a hospital Monday as a precautionary measure.

He was able to jog off the practice field after he fell awkwardly on his upper back.

“He shook it off,” Buffs coach Jon Embree said. “He landed, he got up.”

Thornton was taken to Boulder Community Hospital for further examination. As part of standard procedure, a fire truck, ambulance and campus police car arrived outside the practice field.

There was no update Monday evening on his status.

Overall, Embree was encouraged by the defensive effort going into the final week of spring ball. The offense had dominated Saturday’s scrimmage, but the defense forced some turnovers and dominated red-zone work when the team returned to practice.

CU also announced that first-round draft prospect and All-America offensive tackle Nate Solder will be honored at halftime of the spring game Saturday night. His name and No. 78 jersey number will be displayed on the west side of the stadium outside the press box. Mason Crosby, who kicked for the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, was the last CU football player to have his jersey honored, in 2007.

AFA’s Smith honored.

Air Force freshman Erik Smith has been named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Lacrosse League rookie of the week, as released by the league on Monday.

A midfielder from Golden, Smith shared the team lead with three points as AFA picked up its first road win of the season in a 14-5 victory over Mercer on Saturday. Along with his two goals and an assist, Smith won 10-of-12 faceoffs.
