KABUL — A top Afghan official confirmed Wednesday that the Afghan government had been in peace talks with the Taliban.
Mohammad Massoom Stanekzai, secretary of the High Peace Council and an adviser to President Hamid Karzai, said ongoing reconciliation talks had been underway with insurgents for some time. The remarks came at a news conference to announce a $50 million donation from the U.S. government to the High Peace Council to support reconciliation efforts with the Taliban.
