BOULDER, Colo.—The head prosecutor in Boulder, Colo., says he won’t seek the death penalty for a 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a University of New Hampshire football player.

District Attorney Stan Garnett announced the decision in court documents filed Wednesday.

Kevin Michael McGregor of Longmont, Colo., is accused of shooting 20-year-old Todd Walker after confronting Walker and one of his friends near the University of Colorado around 2 a.m. March 18.

McGregor faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree murder after deliberation, attempted robbery and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. He would face life in prison if convicted of the murder charges.

Walker’s father, Mark Walker, told the Daily Camera he supports Garnett’s decision, partly because seeking the death penalty could take years.
