A 48-year-old Denver man is facing charges he tried to kill a woman who had a restraining order against him.

Littleton Police said the woman escaped from Leroy James Chavez, after, she alleges, he broke into her apartment in the 5900 block of South Bemis Street at about 12:45 a.m. today and tried to kill her.

She ran to a neighbor’s apartment, and Chavez drove off. He was stopped and arrested by a police officer responding to the neighbor’s 911 call.

“The woman sustained a number of injuries, but none were life threatening,” Littleton police said in a media release this afternoon.

Police did not characterize the relationship between Chavez and the woman. Public records show he was divorced in November.

Chavez is being held on $200,000 bond on numerous charges: of criminal attempt to commit murder, second-degree kidnapping, robbery, first-degree burglary, assault, domestic violence and violation of a restraining order.

Chavez has a lengthy criminal record, including previous arrests on charges that include burglary, assault, trespassing and domestic violence.

In 1998, two sex offense charges against Chavez were dropped, records show.
