Investigators determined today that the fire that damaged two Arvada homes and injured two firefighters early Sunday morning was caused by charcoal ashes left in a gas barbecue grill.
Residents at 6555 Union St. used their grill the night before and left the ashes unattended, according to a news release from the Arvada Fire Department.
Later that night a strong wind stirred up the remaining charcoal ashes, which ignited some boxes and dry leaves in the back yard.
A five-gallon gas can and barbecue propane cylinder caused the fire to move quickly and spread to the neighbor’s residence at 6565 Union St..
Two firefighters were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injures.
Everyon in the homes got out without any injuries.
The names of the two injured firefighters are not being released at the request of the families.
