Investigators determined Thursday that the fire that damaged two Arvada homes and injured two firefighters early Sunday was caused by charcoal ashes left in a gas barbecue grill.
Residents at 6555 Union St. used their grill the night before and left the ashes unattended, according to the Arvada Fire Department.
Later that night, a strong wind stirred up the remaining charcoal ashes, which ignited some boxes and dry leaves in the backyard.
A five-gallon gasoline can and barbecue propane cylinder caused the fire to move quickly and spread to the neighbor’s residence at 6565 Union St.
