COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Prior to the congressional agreement to keep the government running, the military said food and other services for troops in war zones wouldn’t have been interrupted by a shutdown.
Col. Robert McLaughlin, the Fort Carson garrison commander, said prior to Friday night’s compromise that department-store-style Exchanges will remain open because they’re self-supporting.
The Air Force Academy said about 350 of its roughly 700 faculty are civilians and would have been sent home in a shutdown.
The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported that 5,000 federal workers in the area could have been sent home in a shutdown.
The area is home to Fort Carson, the Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.
