NEW YORK — Uncle Mo is unbeaten no longer.
Toby’s Corner surged past Uncle Mo and Arthur’s Tale in the stretch to post a shocking upset in the $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday.
Uncle Mo came into the Grade 1 Wood as the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby in four weeks, but that will all change after one of the biggest upsets in the 87-year history of the Wood.
• Midnight Interlude won the Santa Anita Derby in Arcadia, Calif., giving Bob Baffert another Kentucky Derby contender after his other horse in the race (Jaycito) was scratched because of a foot injury.
• Lilacs and Lace pulled off a stunner in the $400,000 Ashland Stakes in Lexington, Ky., going wire-to-wire to punch her ticket to next month’s Kentucky Oaks.
• Joe Vann, who isn’t nominated to the Triple Crown series, won the $300,000 Illinois Derby in Cicero.
• A.P. Indy, the 1992 horse of the year and one of the industry’s top stallions, has been retired by Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky.
Wozniacki in Circle Cup final
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Caroline Wozniacki, the world’s top-ranked player, broke the serve of Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic five times in a 6-4, 6-4 semifinal victory at the Family Circle Cup.
Wozniacki, a 20-year-old Dane, reached the tournament final for the second time in three appearances. She’ll face unseeded Russian Elena Vesnina in today’s title match.
Vesnina defeated China’s Peng Shuai 7-6 (4), 6-3 to advance.
• Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 7-5 at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston to reach the second final of his ATP career.
Nishikori will face American Ryan Sweeting today. Sweeting, a wild-card entry, advanced to his first ATP final with a 7-6 (3) 6-3 victory over Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic.
Power captures IndyCar pole
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Will Power is on the pole again for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama.
Power claimed his second pole in two races this season and second straight at Barber Motorsports Park, posting a fast lap of 1 minute, 11.46 seconds.
He’ll start on the inside of the front row today, next to Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe. Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves will start on the second row.
• Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel claimed the pole position for today’s Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
