FLORENCE, Colo.—Cracks have opened in the Florence High School cafeteria and gymnasium and in its athletic stadium.
School officials tell the Canon City Daily Record that engineers have checked the building and say it’s safe to use, but the stadium seats have been closed because a stairway has separated about six inches from a wall.
Problems have also developed because the stadium running track has shifted.
Florence-Penrose School District Superintendent Cyndy Scriven says its unclear how much all the repairs will cost, but the stadium could cost $300,000 to $500,000. She says school district attorneys have been working on a settlement with the contractor for more than two years.
Scriven says the problems apparently are caused by a water source under the building. She says the water source hasn’t been isolated.
