DENVER—Colorado anti-tax crusader Douglas Bruce calls the tax evasion charges against him “false, frivolous and phony.”
The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that Bruce was in court in Denver Monday to be advised of the charges against him. He told The Gazette that he’s innocent and the charges are politically motivated.
A state grand jury indicted Bruce April 7. The indictment alleges that for the 2005-2007 tax years, he failed to declare $178,000 in interest earned on more than $2 million that he deposited into a bank account for Active Citizens Together, a nonprofit he established in 2001.
Attorney General John Suthers’ office says politics played no role in the indictment.
Bruce wrote the Colorado Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, a 1992 voter-approved constitutional amendment that limits government spending and taxing.
