MONUMENT, Colo.—A train slowly leaking hydrochloric acid has prompted the evacuation of 255 homes in Monument.
Residents of another 160 homes are expected to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon once crews start to transfer the remaining load of acid to another tanker. That’s a precaution in case more acid leaks or causes an explosion.
Evacuees are being told to take supplies for 48 hours in case the cleanup takes longer than hoped for.
With calm winds, El Paso County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jackie Kirby says the risk to the public is minimal now. However, authorities are keeping an eye on the weather.
Schools are closed because some buildings have been set aside to serve as shelters.
Hydrochloric acid gives off corrosive fumes that can cause irritation to skin, eyes and lungs.
