Last year, 82 motorcyclists were killed in Colorado, which is 18 percent of total traffic deaths in the state. The Colorado Department of Transportation says a lack of motorcycle training looks to be a major factor, so they are warning of the disturbing and deadly trend.
While the number of motorcyclist fatalities is down from 86 in 2009 and mirrors the national trend, CDOT is concerned about how much experience the bikers who died had.
“What’s alarming is the fatalities we’ve had. Thirty-three percent of the motorcyclists who died were not motorcycle endorsed,” Glenn Davis, Manager of CDOT’s Motorcycle Safety Program, said.
Davis says having a motorcycle endorsement is required by law for bikers.
