PUEBLO, Colo.—A 30-year-old man has been killed in an explosion at a metals recycling business in Pueblo.
The explosion occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday at Western Metals Recycling, which is near the Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel Mill in Pueblo and 100 miles south of Denver.
A contract worker from Hammond, La., was killed. Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor tells The Chieftain that the explosion happened when something was being welded.
No one else was injured. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lisa Shorter says the company has notified federal workplace safety investigators.
An official with Western Metals declined to comment.
The recycling company leases the site from Evraz. Western Metals’ website says it’s based in Salta Lake City and has eight processing plants in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Nevada.
