Thornton officials are examining an item found in a trash bag to determine whether it was explosive.
The driver of a Thornton trash called police about 8:30 this morning to say he saw something odd in a bag he had picked up, according a news release from Thornton Police Department.
The driver had stopped behind the Sunrise Shopping Center at 9131 N. Washington St. He wasn’t sure where he had picked up the bag.
The item was about 8 inches long and appeared to have a fuse. The bomb squad was sent out and the “rendered the device safe,” the release said.
As a precaution, Thornton Elementary, Middle and High School were put on lockout until around 11 a.m.
