Jason Lee Stroud tried to hang himself in a police holding cell after his 2010 arrest on suspicion of fatally stabbing his father in their central Colorado Springs home.

Later the same morning, the murder suspect again made his death wish known — while asking a detective about Colorado’s death penalty.

“I can request that, is that correct?” Stroud asked, according to footage of a 20-minute police interview that prosecutors showed on the opening day of testimony in Stroud’s murder trial in 4th Judicial District Court.

Stroud, 33, is accused in the May 3, 2010, slaying of 59-year-old Terry Lee Stroud, who was stabbed in the face and chest while lying in bed at the home he shared with his wife and son at 2970 El Capitan Drive.

District Judge Timothy J. Schutz told jurors that Stroud’s sanity will be examined as the trial unfolds.
