Five people were taken to the hospital this morning after a fire started in Federal Heights.
At 6:53 a.m. a fire started in a home at 2000 W. 92nd Ave. after someone was smoking cigarettes while using an oxygen tank, according to the Federal Heights Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames coming out of the east side of the single family home.
Police officers discovered one victim on the back porch and a search and rescue team pulled one victim from the home. Both were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Three Federal Heights police officers were also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and have since been released.
Firefighters contained the flames to the east side of the home and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
Neighbors told 9News they tried to warn the couple not to smoke inside their home.
“I said, ‘Why are you smoking on oxygen?'” neighbor Viola Morse said. “She says ‘It don’t hurt if you don’t have it turned on.'”
