Five people were taken to a hospital Saturday morning after a fire started in Federal Heights.

At 6:53 a.m., a fire started in a mobile home at 2000 W. 92nd Ave. after someone was smoking cigarettes while using an oxygen tank, according to the Federal Heights Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames coming out of the east side of the single-family home.

Police officers discovered one victim on the back porch, and a search-and-rescue team pulled one victim from the house. Both residents, described as elderly, were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Three Federal Heights police officers were also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and were released.

Firefighters contained the flames to the east side of the home and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

Neighbors told 9News they tried to warn the couple not to smoke inside their home.

“I said, ‘Why are you smoking on oxygen?’ ” neighbor Viola Morse said. “She says, ‘It don’t hurt if you don’t have it turned on.’ “

One dog was killed in the fire. A second dog survived and was taken to an animal shelter.
