The 550-acre Sand Gulch Fire in the San Isabel National Forest near Wetmore is 70 percent contained, officials said tonight.
The fire was caused by lightning on April 26. Full containment is expected by Friday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire closed roads and caused evacuations of about 40 homes, but no one was injured and no structures have been lost. Evacuees were allowed to return home Saturday.
The fire is burning in ponderosa pine, white and Douglas firs and oak brush, according to the Forest Service.
Wetmore is about 25 miles south of Cañon City and 50 miles west of Pueblo.
