KOSICE, Slovakia — Nick Palmieri scored twice and the United States scored four third-period goals to beat Norway 4-2 on Monday and advance to the second round of the ice hockey world championship.

Norway took a 2-0 lead with goals 73 seconds apart from Ken Andre Climb and Anders Bastiansen in the first period.

But Palmieri, who played for the New Jersey Devils, started the comeback and also scored the winner after Jack Skille tied it at 2.

Craig Smith finished the scoring with a power-play goal to put away the Norwegians. Al Montoya finished with 13 saves for the United States, which outshot Norway 49-15 and will face Sweden in its final Group C match Wednesday.

In Group D in Bratislava, Slovakia, defending champion Czech Republic advanced by cruising past Denmark 6-0, while Finland edged Latvia 3-2 after a penalty shootout.

Buckeyes linebacker suspended

Bell, a redshirt sophomore, was expected to play because the Buckeyes lost starters Ross Homan and Brian Rolle off last year’s team.

• Suspended Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd hopes to have a plea deal in place on his misdemeanor drunken driving charge before his next court appearance in June, his attorney said.

Magistrate Brian Steinke entered a not-guilty plea on Floyd’s behalf and a status hearing was scheduled for June 7.

Power wins São Paulo 300

SÃO PAULO — Will Power of Australia overcame a damaged car and a wet track to win IndyCar’s São Paulo 300 a day after the race was postponed because of heavy rain on the streets of South America’s biggest city. Graham Rahal was second and Ryan Briscoe third at the 2.5-mile, 11-turn street circuit.

Power, who started from the pole position, drove to victory after Japan’s Takuma Sato had to pit for fuel with about 10 minutes left.

Sato led for 23 laps but finished eighth after his gamble failed.

“Bad rule” under review

BETHESDA, Md. — Webb Simpson called it a “bad rule.” He was penalized a stroke because the ball moved as he was addressing it on the green of the 15th hole Sunday at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, costing him one stroke and perhaps his first PGA Tour victory.

The U.S. Golf Association appears to agree. Vice president Thomas O’Toole said there will be talks to modify the rule, with any change taking place at the start of 2012.

Footnotes.

Danny Kassap, a former world-class runner who fled to Canada from Congo during a 2001 competition, died in Toronto a day after withdrawing from a race because he was not feeling well. He was 28.

• Former world champion Alessandro Ballan has been suspended again from the BMC team and will miss the upcoming Giro d’Italia.
