DENVER—A Florida lawyer accused of operating in Colorado without a license says he was closing down his work in the state when the Colorado attorney general sued his firm.

Clint Johnson of the Johnson Law Group in Orlando said Tuesday he originally thought he had the necessary permits to offer debt management services in Colorado. He says that when Colorado officials told him in 2009 he didn’t, he agreed to a cease-and-decease order.

Johnson says he also agreed to finish his existing cases at no charge to clients. He says he was also terminating other Colorado cases his firm acquired from another law group.

Johnson says he’s doing what Colorado regulators asked and that none of his Colorado clients have complained.

The Colorado attorney general announced the lawsuit last week.
