GOLDEN, Colo.—Colorado residents gathered in Golden to remember officers slain in the line of duty.

Colorado flags were lowered Friday, declared Friday Law Enforcement Memorial Day by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

This year’s observance included a Weld County sheriff’s deputy killed with his own gun last November after a high-speed chase. The suspect wrestled Deputy Sam Brownlee’s gun away from him and shot him.

The observance also honored some lawmen killed long ago. They include former Las Animas County Sheriff Juan Tafoya, who died in a saloon shootout in 1872.

The Greeley Tribune reported that Hickenlooper headed to the Colorado State Patrol Academy in Golden to mark the occasion and add seven names of fallen law officers to a memorial.
