The Colorado Springs firefighter who was the first to glimpse the scalded, lifeless body of a 9-month-old boy left unattended in a bathtub in March described the moment as “surreal” in court testimony this morning.

Prosecutors have charged the child’s mother, 23-year-old Estella Toleafoa, with first-degree murder in the child’s death.

Toleafoa told authorities she left Erich Tyler Jr. in about an inch of water while she went across the street to buy milk shortly before 6 p.m. on March 8. Instead, she ended up buying chicken wings and cigarettes.

The children’s father is a Fort Carson soldier who was serving in Afghanistan at the time.
