BOULDER, Colo.—Environmentally conscious graduates can now opt to wear gowns made of recycled plastic soda and water bottles at their ceremonies.
The Daily Camera reported Thursday the 2011 graduating seniors at the University of Colorado in Boulder were the first students to be offered the eco-friendly graduation gowns.
University officials say they’ve never offered the gowns before because the prices were too high, but this year the gowns cost only slightly more than traditional attire. The university-wide commencement is Friday.
In 2009, Sierra Magazine recognized CU as the country’s greenest university. The ranking was based on a sustainable practices survey.
In 2007, the university introduced the “green pledge.” Student leaders say around 300 graduates this year have made a promise to be socially and environmentally responsible in their future working environments.
