Domestic airfares from Denver International Airport from the fourth quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter 2010 decreased 28.5 percent, according to a new U.S. Bureau of Transportation report.

Only three other airports – Milwaukee, Atlantic City, N.J., and White Plains, N.Y. – saw larger decreases, according to the study.

In the fourth quarter of 2000, the domestic average itinerary fare from DIA was $419 while in the fourth quarter of 2010, it was $299.

The federal agency said the fares were based on domestic itinerary fares, round-trip or one-way for which no return was purchased. The fares were based on total ticket value which consists of the price charged by the airlines plus any additional taxes and fees levied by an outside entity at the time of purchase.

During the same decade, the largest increases in fares were in three Texas cities – El Paso, Lubbock and Dallas-Love – as well as Reno, NV, and Burbank, CA.

In the report, the Bureau of Transportation said that average domestic airfares rose $337 in the fourth quarter of 2010, up 5.2 percent from the average fare of $320 in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Newark-Liberty, NJ, had the highest average fare, $461, while Atlantic City, NJ, had the lowest, $156.
