Symphony X blasted through a heavy set of metal songs spanning numerous albums at the Bluebird Theater last night, including two tracks from the soon to be released, “Iconoclast.” Lead singer Russell Allen is a tower of a man and he aggressively belted out lyrics in good form, at times sounding like the ghost of Ronnie James Dio.

The band is known for its technical proficiency, in particular the guitar prowess of Mike Romeo, which wasn’t well represented by the muddy mix and tone. In fact, Romeo’s solos, which are a highlight of their music, were often disappointingly muffled. The keyboards were also buried in much of the show, but took front and center during the epic encore, when the band played the progressive and melodic 20-minute track, “The Odyssey.” This was the pinnacle of the performance, as confirmed by the applause of the two-thirds full venue as the song both began and ended.
