CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jonathan Byrd lived up to his surname Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship.

In a mix with a half-dozen other players trying to keep in range of Pat Perez, Byrd ran off five birdies in six holes to start the back nine and finished with a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead into the final round.

He was at 15-under 201 and will try to win for the third time in the last seven months on the tour.

“I don’t know if I’m going to win,” Byrd said. “But I’m playing good enough to win.”

Lucas Glover (69) and Stewart Cink (68) were three shots back.

Mark Calcavecchia has a one-shot lead over Jay Haas in the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala.

Thomas Aiken has a two-shot lead going into today’s final round at the Spanish Open in Terrassa.

MLS: Real Salt Lake tops Chivas

SANDY, Utah — Will Johnson scored in the 87th minute and Real Salt Lake stretched its home unbeaten streak in MLS to 28 games with a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA.

Nadal defeats rival Federer

MADRID — Top-ranked Rafael Nadal extended his dominance on clay to beat rival Roger Federer.

Nadal rallied to reach his third straight Madrid Open final with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win. Novak Djokovic rallied to beat unseeded Thomaz Bellucci 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
