A smoke detector woke a Briargate area resident Monday morning in time for him to escape a house fire.

However, it appeared at least two of the man’s dogs were killed in the blaze, firefighters said.

The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. on Stemwood Drive. According to broadcast reports, the man jumped from a second-story window to escape.

Officials are investigating what sparked the fire and searching for man’s missing dog.
