The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents, including people living in Highlands Ranch and Parker, about daytime house break-ins and burglaries.

“Generally, one suspect stays in a vehicle as a lookout while another suspect rings the doorbell to determine if anyone is home,” the sheriff’s office said in a media release. “One of the suspects forces entry through a side access door and they prop open the door between the house and the garage and load the vehicle in the garage or in the driveway.”

Typically such burglaries happen on a weekday when residents are out of the home and at work.

Several arrests have been made in similar cases recently but the sheriff’s office said the problem is ongoing.

Residents can deter burglaries by taking precautionary steps including:

Keep the garage closed and locked.

Make sure all doors are closed and locked with a dead bolt.

Talk with neighbors and ask them to be alert and report suspicious people and activities.

Residents who notice suspicious activity in their neighborhood should call the sheriff’s office at 303-660-7500 or in an emergency dial 911.
