FRISCO, Colo.—The Northwest Colorado Council of Governments has drafted an economic development strategy for the region that calls for looking beyond its ski resorts and strengthening other forms of tourism.

The Summit Daily News reports the group is asking for public comments on the draft.

Developing a strategy is an important step for the group to become an economic development district. That status would mean the organization’s region, which covers Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin and Summit counties, would be recognized by the U.S. Economic Development Administration and be eligible for federal funding to help diversify the economy.

The draft strategy includes objectives like strengthening fishing and hunting; expanding retail diversity; developing parks, roads and recreational amenities; and expanding available health services.
