Controversial Greeley-Evans District 6 School Board member Brett Reese — who said earlier this year he wanted to bring his gun to board meetings — is facing allegations he violated board policies, including sexual discrimination and harassment.
The other policies are improper conduct by a board member and violation of the district’s drug-free- workplace policy. The district is declining to give specifics about the complaints made to the school board.
The district has scheduled a special 8 a.m. meeting for today to discuss the allegations.
A portion of the meeting will be in executive session, said district spokesman Roger Fiedler.
Reese stormed out of a regular Monday meeting saying board members were spending too much time congratulating the district on its accomplishments.
Reese said he had never heard about the allegations until Tuesday.
“What a mess,” Reese said.
He then said he didn’t want to talk to the media.
“I don’t trust the media, The Denver Post . . . or the Greeley Tribune,” he said. “No matter what I say, it won’t be accurate.”
Richard Reilly, a former student at the University of Northern Colorado, said Tuesday it is time for Reese to leave the board.
“He has become a liability to the district,” said Reilly, who plans to start a petition drive to recall Reese in June. “It’s been kind of sad for the district. I know there are parents who don’t want to send their kids to the district because they hear and see things about Brett Reese and they wonder what is going on in the administration of the district.”
Reese, who manages a radio station in Greeley, was elected to the board in 2009. He ran on the platform of bringing common-sense solutions to a district that has budget problems and traditionally low test scores.
But he attracted statewide attention in January when his station began broadcasting an opinion piece denouncing Martin Luther King Jr.
The Martin Luther King Jr. controversy would have been a good time for healthy dialogue, but instead the district was focused on Reese’s gun- toting, Reilly said.
“Everything, as usual, was focused on Brett Reese, and I think he enjoys that,” he said.
