An elderly woman was taken to the hospital this afternoon after she was rescued from a fire at a Lakewood condominium complex.
Shortly before 1 p.m., crews received a call about a fire with a woman trapped on the second floor of a condo at 630 Carr St., said Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for West Metro Fire Rescue.
When crews arrived, the second floor of the home was engulfed in flames. Firefighters told three civilians battling the blaze with a garden hose to get back.
Three Lakewood police officers, who arrived ahead of firefighters, climbed the stairs into the complex. There they found an elderly woman.
The officers were able to pull the woman from the home just as firefighters arrived.
The woman was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital with severe burns to her arms and legs. She was later transferred to University of Colorado Hospital.
One Lakewood police officer was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.
Matthews said the fire started in the woman’s bedroom and was caused by careless smoking. The fire may have been enhanced by medical oxygen tanks in the room.
