A memorial celebration and fundraiser on Monday will honor Drennen O’Melia, a 12-year-old who died during a pool party last year in Centennial.
Drennen, who was called a “strong swimmer,” had qualified for three events on the day before he died, to earn a spot on the Southglenn Gators swim team.
After his death, Drennen O’Melia’s family began a foundation in his honor, and have been raising money to support causes that he was interested in.
On March 6, work began to make way for the new Drennen O’Melia Youth Center at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, according to the foundation’s website.
On Monday, a ceremony will first take place at 4 p.m. at Drennen’s gravesite at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery in Littleton.
A barbecue will follow at about 5 p.m. at Cherry Knolls Park, where the family will be selling memorial T-Shirts and wristbands.
