LA JUNTA, Colo.—One of at least five wildfires burning in southern Colorado has charred up to 17,000 acres.
Stonewall Fire Protection District spokesman Loyd Holliman said Thursday the fire south of La Junta (lah-HUN’-tah) is between 15,000 and 17,000 acres. It was initially thought to be 25,000 acres.
Holliman says six or seven homes have been asked to voluntarily evacuate. Crews were pulled off the fire Wednesday to wait for overhead support.
A 2,500-acre fire also near La Junta is among several that might have been sparked by lightning Tuesday.
A 50-acre wildfire near Cripple Creek in south-central Colorado has prompted the evacuations of 104 homes
Two fires on Fort Carson’s Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site have burned a total of about 51 square miles in the remote area. A 26,000-acre fire is about 50 percent contained.
