Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp is your basic Triple Crown candidate, having gone into Saturday ranked first in the NL in home runs (19), second in RBIs (54) and third in hitting (.332). Kemp’s homer Friday night cleared the left-field bleachers, bounced on the concourse and flew over Helton’s Burger Shack into the parking lot.
Giambino watch.
Jason Giambi’s defense at first base cost the Rockies a run in the fifth inning Saturday night. Giambi snagged Andre Ethier’s potential double-play ball, but threw wildly to Troy Tulowitzki at second base. Tulo grabbed the ball on a hop, but with Jamey Carroll sliding into him, he overthrew first, allowing Ethier to advance. Kemp then drove him home with the tying run.
Charlie Hustle.
Rookie Charlie Blackmon was caught off first in the fifth, but beat the throw to second for his first major-league stolen base.
